Christmas Collectibles Cause Chaos
Every year, after the Thanksgiving bloat, out come the Christmas boxes.full of memories and the christmas figurines and ornaments from the last umpty-ump Christmases. Every year a few more are added, and occasionally a glass one gets broken. We try to handle them gently even though the excitement of emptying each box of ornaments adds to the splendor of the Christmas tree. Festoons of glass bead garland, the thinnest glass ornaments, a few ornaments made by family member (not quite so fragile) and the really special and fragile ornaments that are over fifty years old. Every year the same, yet different as some come and a few go.
The figurines are displayed on mantle and shelf. Nativity scenes, angels, tree candles, reindeer and Santa Claus. All the old favorites make their appearance as the packing boxes get emptier and emptier. With the greenery and pine cones, the last box is emptied and the finals arrangements can be made. Now to enjoy the display until Christmas Day.
One thing that is less often found in the family Christmas collection are antique music boxes. If you are among the lucky ones that have an antique music box, be glad. So many got dropped or over-wound and have fallen by the wayside. Which lucky child was considered old enough to wind the box and start the music? Does your music box play more than one Christmas carol? Even better.
Christmas comes with many memories, some that are based on reality and some not. That doesn’t matter. What matters is that there are memories between people and which are represented by the special ornaments of the holiday season. All of the end-of-year celebrations are meant to remind up of who we are and what we could be in the coming year. And when the festivities are over, the decorations are packed up again until another year is almost over.
