How To Find Used Fitness Equipment
The excitement I felt at committing to finally put together my own home gym was only rivaled by the shock I felt when I realized that buying weights and training machines can be an extremely expensive venture. Once I decided that I didn’t need to buy my equipment new, it was a lot easier to face. The reality is, finding used fitness equipment is extremely easy, for reasons that are both unfortunate and predictable.
I say unfortunate because most of the people who make resolutions to get back in shape do not ever get around to it. They make resolutions and set goals because that’s what we’re conditioned to do when January rolls around. Many of us even go so far as to buy free weights, barbells, dumbbells, and gym memberships because this year is “finally the year.” Then the equipment sits in the corner and reminds us that we’ve fallen into the same old pattern.
For the person setting up their own garage gym, this can be great news. We all know people. Families, coworkers, friends, etc. Most of them have probably made fitness goals and abandoned them at some point. A percentage of that group would almost certainly be willing to unload their used dumbbells and weight plates for some quick cash.
I have also had decent results with online classified ads like Craigslist, but I find it much easier simply to approach the people I already know. This is how I make my peace with taking equipment off of their hands that they should be using for their own strength training: I give them each a standing offer that they can come use the gear any time they want.
Back to predictable: most of them say “Great!” then don’t ever follow through. But if you want to quit the traditional gym scene and work out in privacy and solitude, their loss can be your gain. Sad but true. Predictable but unfortunate.
